Baby in Byron Bay
By Joanne, mother of James
James was just five months when we took a trip to Byron Bay. I felt pretty confident about travelling with James because the flight wasn’t too long and we have friends up there so had been many times before. We were looking forward to introducing our new baby.
We arrived for our 10-day holiday at a large rented house with a private swimming pool, right on the beach in Suffolk Park, about a 10 minute drive (30 minute walk) from Byron. It was schoolies week so we didn’t want to stay in the centre of town as it would have been too noisy and busy. Also, with James still sleeping so much, I was rather tied to the house so we wanted to stay in a place with a pool. It was the perfect solution as I could pop James down then relax while he snoozed.
On a rainy day, we went for a drive to Tweed Heads and stopped at some beautiful little villages. Most other days we strolled into Byron in the morning for a coffee then headed home and relaxed by the pool with a book. My husband Michael is a cyclist so he rented a road bike from a shop in Byron and did a fair bit of cycling. We also had our friends and their little boy over to stay – another benefit of staying in a house rather than a hotel.
In the evenings we walked to the local pub for a shandy then returned home to pop James into bed and enjoy the wonderful local produce from Bangalow markets. We did think about going into Byron a couple of times but the house was so lovely it was nice to stay close to home or have friends over for a barbecue.
James was a really contented little baby while we were there. It was great to be able to let him roll around on the verandah in the noddy.
