Baby in Hawaii
By Zoe, mother of May
My daughter May was 10 months old when John and I decided to take a family holiday in the sun. Our older son Tom (three) was really excited at the prospect of a trip to Far North Queensland. But when I started looking into packages online, I found it was actually cheaper to go to Hawaii. Id always wanted to go there and, being pregnant with number three, liked the security of being in America from a healthcare point of view.
We booked a 17 day trip and flew Hawaiian Air from Sydney to Honolulu (about 11 hours). Our apartment in Waikiki was great: reasonably priced with a pool, playground, shop and a full kitchen which was handy for preparing baby food.
It was also really close to the beach, which is what we did most mornings. There was plenty of shade from the palm trees and the ocean was lovely and warm. (Parts are walled off so it’s not deep.) We hung out there or by the pool and we also took a few day trips: we went to Honolulu zoo a couple of times (no charge for Tom or May) and we went shopping at the Ala Moana mall, which was a treat for me! Clothes were really well priced in Macys and Sears and I spent a lot of time stocking up on baby stuff in Gap.
In the evenings we went for an early dinner – the Marriott hotel had a fantastic buffet where kids and babies ate for free so we went there a few times! – and then retired to our apartment to put the kids to bed and enjoy the warm evening air on the balcony.
All in all it was one of the best holidays I’ve ever been on. It was a perfect combination of activity and relaxation.
