Baby in Phuket (Mai Khao)
By Zoe, mother of Eric
When I found out some good friends of ours who lived in Singapore had rented a villa in Thailand we decided to go over and join them for a visit. We flew Thai Air (worth noting the bassinettes are on the small side and really only suitable for babies up to six months) and overnighted in Bangkok at a downtown hotel which had great facilities for a short stay – a proper cot (not a travel cot), high chair and plenty of baby friendly food at breakfast.
In Phuket, we stayed at a resort on Mai Khao beach, about 60km from Patong, which had over 100 rooms and villas, some of them time share and others for holiday makers, plus numerous restaurants and pools as well as buggy service around the resort.
We’d hired a two-bed apartment so Eric could have a separate room. He was well catered for with a good quality travel cot and a fantastic black-out blind which meant he didn’t wake up at first light. I’d definitely check on this in future as some hotels have really flimsy curtains and this meant we were able to sleep in well past dawn.
During the day we lazed by the pool. Eric loved being in the water and we took it in turns to keep up with his appetite for splashing around. There was a kids club where older children could spend the day which also had a selection of baby toys (parents were required to stay with the babies).
In the evenings we joined our friends to eat at the resort restaurants and enjoyed an early cocktail while Eric slept in his pram. It was a great trip and actually really relaxing which isn’t a word that naturally pairs with a one year old.
